Locavore – Kapitolyo, Pasig

locavore1

Locavore is a newly opened restaurant in Kapitolyo, Pasig that specializes in modern Filipino cuisine. I’m guessing their ingredients are all locally produced, since the neologism locavore means a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, not moved long distances to market. (Thank you, Wikipedia.)

Jan and I brought our balikbayan friend Miko to Locavore because we’re sure he missed Pinoy dishes terribly as he was in Japan for such a looooong time. Nine days to be exact. Hehe.

locavore3

It’s not hard to locate Locavore. It’s just 5 minutes away from Ace Water Spa and Hotel. It’s also hard to miss the simple and classy bamboo façade and the big sign with a gigantic rooster. I loved the contemporary industrial look of the place. We went there on a Sunday, around 6pm, and the only available seats were the ones outside. I suggest you make a reservation when you want to dine there on a weekend.

We had their bestseller, the Sizzling Sinigang. It has beef short ribs, sautéed French beans, sampaloc gravy, garlic confit, cherry tomatoes, and native red onions. It’s 530php and it’s worth every peso. The meat was tender (the meat was braised for 5hours) and the veggies were sweet. And the gravy was wow!

locavore5

I usually have a small saucer of patis, calamansi, and sili to go with my sinigang, but their sinigang didn’t need any additional zing. Thanks to the friendly staff for still giving me chopped siling labuyo because I didn’t notice that all of the dishes came with some chili at the side. :p

locavore6

We also had the Sugpo Con Mayonesa (650php). It has Jumbo black tiger prawns, aligue, garlic, butter, and Japanese mayonnaise. Sarsa pa lang, ulam na. Imagine, aligue and mayonnaise… what a beautiful, wonderful lethal combo. Ano sabi nila? Masarap ang bawal? Good thing, walang may highblood sa amin. Yataaaa. Miko, kumusta batok mo? :P

locavore7

Then there’s the Lechon and Oyster Sisig (400php). Fried oysters topped with crumbled lechon and lechon sauce. I’m not a fan of oysters, but I liked the elements of lechon with it. I expected it sizzling hot because it’s served in an iron skillet (?), but it was just warm when it was served to us. Not a biggie, though. Just saying. :)

locavore8

We all had the Roasted Garlic White Rice (70php), but I didn’t really taste the garlic so much. I wanted to try the brown rice version of it, but it wasn’t available that time.

locavore9

We can’t decide which was the better dish, the sinigang or the sugpo. One thing’s decided for sure, we liked all three dishes we ordered. Other dishes that we want to try when we go back (yes, we are most def eating at Locavore again) are the Lechon Mami, Boneless Lechon Belly, and the Pusit a la Pobre.

locavore10

I didn’t think the meal could get any yummier, until I tasted the Torta Mangga. Kaya pala Jan and Miko kept saying panalo and winner and sarap-sarap. Nauna sila magdessert, ang bagal ko kumain. I was still dissecting a prawn head when they started devouring the torte. I thought they were just exaggerating but they weren’t. The Torta Mangga has ripe mangoes, meringue, dulce de leche, and tablea bits. Parang liquid yema ‘yung dulce de leche.  It was incredible! Perfect meal-ender.

locavore11

Well, the real perfect meal-ender would have been cocktails, but we decided to go to QC for drinks, so we’ll have to go back to try their alcoholic conconctions. They have a promo called 7 Shots in 7 Seconds where you get the shots for free if you beat the 7 shots in 7 seconds. (Duh.) If not, you pay 1,500php for the shots. Something I have no doubt I can do. :p
